Red-tailed hawks weigh 2-4 pounds. The female is about ⅓ larger than the male. Their wingspan is about 56 inches in length. This species shows a great deal of individual variation in plumage. Their eyesight is 8 times better than a humans eyesight. A red-tailed hawks defensive system is ¾ made up of their talons. They can scream for 2-3 seconds to protect their nests from predators. The red-tailed hawk is often used in the sport of falconry. Red-tailed hawks don’t usually start breeding until they are 3 years of age and they live for about 20-25 years. Their eggs are white with dots. Red-tailed hawks are usually found in open fields near woodlots. A red tailed hawk's eyes change color as they age. They can eat prey larger than they are such as other bigger birds, but their diet consists mainly of rodents such as mice and squirrels. 85-90 percent of their diet is composed of these small rodents. These birds are occasionally seen hunting in pairs.
