Yacine Fall

Class of 2021

Majors: Biochemistry and African Studies

Hi! My name is Yacine and I am a junior double major in Biochemistry and African Studies. I am passionate about diseases and love the S'Moore lab where I am working on an independent project to create a cancer vaccine! I am trying to create a protein- viral antigen conjugate that can bind to a protein on cancer cells. This is in hopes that it will recruit the immune system to fight cancer. Working in the lab is amazing opportunity because we do such meaningful work, it's a collaborative and learner-friendly environment, and Sarah really supports us as young scientists.

Taking classes in the biochemistry major like organic chemistry and cell biology help me understand cells and the chemistry behind some of the work that I do. Through also taking classes in African studies, I get to explore issues that face the continent and focus on my interest in global public health.

Outside of classes, I co-chair religious programming for Al-iman (the Muslim student association) and I am involved in diversity and inclusion initiatives on campus like the Residential experience working group and being a student representative for the Science Center Committee on Diversity (SCCD). I am also a Posse Scholar and BridgeUp Scholar!

I love having deep conversations about the world, running (fun fact: I know how to do hurdles), and bringing joy into the spaces and people I come across.
