Hi all! My name is Leanna Troncoso and currently, I am a senior Biochemistry major on the pre-medical track. I'm passionate about exploring ways to combat disease and studying the biochemistry of cancer. My other research interests include tissue engineering and medical device design.

I joined the S’Moore lab during SURF 2017. Currently, I am writing an honors thesis on creating a protein-drug conjugate that can monitor and eliminate cancer. I am exploring different ways we can attach a drug to a protein that specifically binds on the surface of cancer cells. This would allow for targeted delivery of cancer-killing molecules which sets the foundation for treatments with less toxic side effects that are more effective relative to current radiation therapy methods. The S’Moore lab has been an outlet for unwavering support and meaningful challenges, which have molded me for the better as a scientific thinker and a self-sustaining researcher. The environment emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration and comfort in making and reflecting on the mistakes necessary to evolve as a great research scientist.

During my free time, I’m usually out admiring nature, trying new foods, doing yoga/meditating, or singing as a form of release. One of my favorite things to do that I’m really bad at is making art!

Outside of the lab, I serve as the secretary and five-college liaison of Smith’s Outdoor’s Club, on the Science Center Committee on Diversity, and a volunteer at the Northampton Homeless Shelter and the Cooley Dickinson Hospital.

Fun facts about me:

  • I'm from Brooklyn, New York
  • I'm the eldest out of 4 siblings
  • I'm a huge fan of anime!
  • I own the cutest, crazy pup named Loki:
