I am embarking on my research journey to understand family caregiving and home-based care infrastructure. The juxtaposition of these three documents surprises me. Based on the findings of value of family caregiving in Canada, and the discussion from Conversation #1 this week, I did not expect to find this document from 2007 articulating strategies to support Canada's family caregivers. It is 15 years since this discussion paper was compiled. How is it possible we were discussing these same issues last Wednesday, September 20, 2022?

As a primary caregiver providing self-funded care infrastructure (labour, facilities, furnishings, food, medical, housekeeping, etc.) for my 91 year old mother, there has been insufficient research and implementation of research findings to make a difference to the rate of burn out that I (and my family) are experiencing.
There is no doubt that a disproportionate amount of caregiving work is being shouldered by unfunded caregivers in their homes. There is no doubt that those who take on the role and responsibility of family caregiver are put at risk for health and socio-economic vulnerabilities. The load on the system, on the number of households, is increasing. The work of family caregivers is unaccounted and unacknowledged. This system is collapsing and in dire need of changing paradigms to underscore system policy and how those policies are carried out in practice.
