Let's Reflect on Unit 4: Privacy & Cybersecurity
Unit 4 focused on digital privacy and cybersecurity, helping me understand the risks, threats, and vulnerabilities that exist when using computers, mobile devices, and the internet. Throughout the unit, I learned about important cybersecurity concepts such as encryption, VPNs, privacy policies, malware, phishing, ransomware, and social engineering, along with practical ways to protect personal information online.
I also researched two current cybersecurity news articles for my ePortfolio. One article explained how hackers used artificial intelligence to identify and exploit a zero-day software vulnerability before it could be patched, while the other focused on sophisticated phishing scams that imitate legitimate companies like Amazon to steal users' login credentials. These activities showed me how quickly cyber threats are evolving and reinforced the importance of staying informed, keeping software updated, verifying websites and emails, and thinking critically before sharing personal information online.
Lesson learned:
This unit taught me that cybersecurity is not just an issue for large companies, it affects everyone who uses technology. Before this unit, I knew phishing scams and malware existed, but I didn't realize how convincing and sophisticated they have become, especially with the use of artificial intelligence. I learned that something as simple as clicking the wrong link or sharing personal information without thinking can have serious consequences. The biggest lesson I took away is that staying safe online requires being alert, questioning suspicious emails or messages, verifying websites before entering information, and practicing good digital habits. These are skills I will continue to use to protect my personal information and help others recognize potential cyber threats.
