In this project, we're discussing the impact of social media on society by reflecting on the ways we see it influence society every day.
Above, you see my results of our social media addiction survey. According to this, I have a healthy relationship with social media which is not surprising to me. These past few years, I've been very intentional about how much I use social media, and how I use it in general.
A surprising statistic:
One statistic that surprised me is that Facebook is still the second most widely used social media platform, despite the rise of apps like Instagram and TikTok. Its longevity is remarkable. While many social media platforms have lost popularity over time, Facebook has remained one of the most dominant platforms.
If you asked me this a few years ago, I would've said I don't think it's as bad as people make it out to be. After Covid however, it seems as though the average person under 30 cannot function without social media. Many people rely on it for communication; to get their news, it's some peoples sole source of income, etc. The overuse has also caused shorter attention spans which I especially see in young children and teens who use it. In my opinion, social media reducing our ability to focus and truly engage.
This project helped me reflect on the impact social media has on our society and how I use it in my own daily life. It made me think more critically about both the benefits and drawbacks of social media, including how it influences communication, relationships, and the way people consume information. Overall, I learned the importance of being more mindful of the content I engage with and the amount of time I spend on social media.
