Let's Reflect on Unit 2: Office & Business Applications
Unit 2 focused on office and business applications and helped me build practical technology skills that I will use throughout college and in my future career. We learned about information systems and explored Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel through detailed SIMnet trainings. The Microsoft Office SIMnet trainings gave me hands-on experience with Word, PowerPoint, and Excel while teaching me many features I had never used before. Even though I had been using Word and PowerPoint for years, I learned advanced formatting techniques, document organization with headings and styles, presentation design tools, and best practices for creating professional documents and slides. Excel was completely new to me, so I learned how to organize data, create formulas and functions, and use spreadsheets to automatically perform calculations instead of doing the math by hand. Overall, the trainings were very in-depth and helped me develop practical skills that I can apply in both my college coursework and future career.
We defined our Unit 2 terms as you can see to the left, but we also began learning how to transfer handwritten notes into organized digital documents. Instead of simply typing our notes, we used headings and styles in Microsoft Word to create a clear structure. This made our notes much more organized, easier to navigate, and more visually appealing. I realized that using these formatting tools not only helps with studying but also creates professional-looking documents that are easier to review and update.
One of my favorite activities in Unit 2 was creating a mind map. Instead of making one on a random topic, I created mine around an upcoming trip to Disney as you can see by my Minnie Mouse pink polka dots. It helped me visually organize everything I needed to plan, including transportation, hotels, park reservations, budgeting, dining, and packing. This activity showed me how mind maps can be useful for planning real-life events, not just school assignments.
