Merpeople, or merfolk reside in the undersea Realm called Sieniäsjen. While they are not a native race to Terapersü, they arrived only 300 years after its conception, making them older than both humans and dwarves. There is a large society of merpeople in a northern sea of Terapersü, but many merpeople choose to live mostly solitary lives instead, only venturing there occasionally. This society is headed by a female monarch. Merpeople are not born with the ability to use magic, but like humans they are able to learn through training. Although merpeople are not born with the ability to do magic, they are more suited for it than humans due to their inherent telepathic and mental shield abilities. More merpeople than humans learn and use magic. Since merpeople are not able to use their voices underwater, they use their telepathic abilities to communicate with each other in the sea, and are able to do so over vast distances. This allows even solitary merpeople to remain connected to the others should they wish to.
Merpeople are humanoid beings, the top half of their body being human-formed, while the bottom half is in the form of a tail similar to that of a fish. Merpeople can swim at great speeds of nearly forty miles per hour, twice as fast as a dolphin working hard. Similar to faeries and dragons, merpeople lay eggs instead of having live births. Children remain with their parents until they are 10 to 15 years old and have reached full maturity.
Unlike what most believe, merpeople are not an immortal race. They do however have much longer lifespans than humans, living to between 700 and 800 years of age. Once per year, during the month of the winter solstice, or the 'Longest Night', merpeople gain the ability to walk on land for 35 days. Should they touch land and remain out of the salt-water for five minutes, their tails will slowly transform to legs. Merpeople who learn magic are able to cause this transformation themselves, allowing them to walk on land for 7 days at a time before needing to restore their energy in water. Not all merpeople choose to leave the water during the month of the solstice. Those who do tend to surface on the island Nefera or on Sliavanüa.
