Skills and abilities are very similar, and you will keep track of both of them in the same way on your character document in the development section. The only real difference between abilities and skills is that abilities are much more rare and you will need to justify your character having an ability in their history. Skills are much more common and you can start working on building any of the skills for your character without needing approval from staff. Your character's skill and ability levels will help determine quite a bit about your character and how much they differ from the other characters within the server. If your character gets into a fight with another character, their skill and ability points will help to determine the final outcome. You can learn more about fighting with your characters in the battles channel.
Abilities and skills are broken down into levels of mastery. When roleplaying with your characters, you should always keep in mind their levels and remember that a trainee will make plenty of mistakes along the way to mastering their abilities.
trainee | 0-50 points
novice | 51-150 points
competent | 151-300 points
expert | 501-750 points
master | 750-1000 points
As you roleplay, your character will earn skill and ability points. There is no limit to the number of skills and abilities that your character can be working on at any given time. You can feel free to create specific posts for your character to earn points for their abilities and skills. Maybe you read a book about a skill or ability and then spend some time practicing with it. Maybe you talk to other characters about the skill or you include NPC characters in your writing for your character to learn from.
Your character will earn 1-2 points for every post that you make that includes your character working on the ability or skill. If your post is long and includes several actions of skill development, give yourself 2 points instead of 1. Your post must be at least 250 words long in order to earn a point.
Your character's list of abilities and skills should be posted in the development section of their character's page. A sample section has been added to the character template for your convenience. Adding skill points for your character is mostly on the honor system, but staff does take a look at character pages regularly and if we notice that you are adding points and you shouldn't be, your points may be reset and you will need to start proving to staff that the points you are earning are legitimate. Just be honest. Please. If we start to have a problem with honesty here we will have to move to a system where points are added by staff only, and let's be honest, ain't nobody got time for that.
Below, you will find a list of all of the available abilities that your character can apply for. If this is a new character, you can simply include the abilities that you'd like your character to have in their character application. In order for them to be approved, you will need to include details about how your character acquired each of the abilities in your character's history. If you would like to acquire the ability through roleplay after your character has already been approved, you will need to submit a separate ability application to council.

If you have questions about if an occupation is realistic for one of your characters you can post in the help channel or reach out to a Council member. Google is your friend for learning all kinds of information about an occupation and how you might roleplay as one in medieval times.
