Magic, or jölva as it is known in the language Arsatena, is an energy that lives within the land of Terapersü. This energy can be found within all living things, though in varying amounts, from the tiniest blade of grass to the largest dragon. Some within the realm have learned to harness this energy in various ways in order cause various reactions. The most authentic and powerful version of this is in the use of the magical language Arsatena to cast spells by harnessing the magical energy within oneself. However, another example of using magic could be mixing various organic materials to merge their magical energies in order to achieve various results. This example of magic is called witchcraft, and is mostly practiced by humans and nalosci. Unlike traditional magic, witchcraft does not rely on one's knowledge of the Arsatena language and ability to harness the magical energy within themselves.
As you just learned above, the traditional manipulation of magic requires knowledge of the language Arsatena in order to achieve results. First, a magic-user must search deep within themselves until they touch the energy stored within them. When they are able to so, a feeling akin to blazing heat will course through their body and then slowly fade. However, this alone will not cause magic to happen. The user must then harness this energy by directing it to perform the desired action before the energy fades away by uttering a phrase in Arsatena.
Extremely experienced magicians may be able to perform magic silently, simply by thinking their spell instead of uttering it out loud. This, however, is dangerous because mistakes can easily be made, causing reactions that were not desired. Even experienced magicians only use silent spells in the most dire of circumstances such as when they are unable to speak.
A magician is always limited by the amount of energy that they have within their body. Therefore, an elf, being extremely strong, will always be more powerful than a human magician. However, experienced magicians can compensate for this by drawing energy from other living things nearby such as animals or even other beings. This can also be dangerous, however, because a magician must be careful not to draw so much energy from the creature that it cannot survive. Once the living entity dies, the energy that was taken dissipates and is unable to be used for spell-casting. A magician must also be careful to never use so much energy that they deplete themselves to the point of unconsciousness or death. Certain things simply cannot be done without killing oneself.
Additional limitations may be added after roleplay starts and things come up. If this happens, there will be an announcement.
Resurrection. Lengthening one's lifespan is possible for someone who is not immortal through spells and/or witchcraft, but bringing back the dead is impossible.
Healing Mortal Wounds. Healing is one of the amazing possibilities of magic. The amount of healing someone can do is limited by their strength and ability with magic, though. Some magicians may only be able to heal cuts and bruises, while others can heal broken bones and knit gaping wounds from the inside out. However, some wounds go too far for any magician to heal, such as serious damage to important organs and grave illnesses such as cancer.
Flying. Flying is only possible for non-flying races if they are on the back of a flying creature that can carry their weight.
Elemental Transformation. Turning an object into something completely different. However, you can use physical transformation in small doses to change your own or someone else's physical features with magic. This can only be done by very powerful magicians. Manipulating an object by changing its shape is also possible for powerful magicians.
Conjuring Objects From Nothing. I know, this is a fun magical ability. However, with the physical strength limits of the magic in this world, conjuring something out of nothing just isn't possible.
Transportation of Heavy Objects/Living Things. Transporting objects instantly from one place to another is possible. You can send objects away from you or bring objects to you. However, there are limits for the distance that you can send objects and for the size and weight of objects depending on how powerful you are. Transporting living things is impossible.
Knowledge/Remembering. Magic cannot be used as a way to cheat at learning new things. You have to learn everything old-fashioned way. You cannot use magic to remember words in Arsatena.
As a general rule of thumb, think about how long (minutes, hours, days, etc.) and how much energy it would take you to do something without the magic. Is your character already weak from travelling for days without proper rest and nourishment? These things all factor in to what kinds of spells your character would be capable of at the time. Just try to be mindful of your limitations and realistic of the feats you are able to perform.
Arsatena is the very first language, the original language of the land. It is tied to the land by magic, and must be used when casting spells. It is a completely made-up language, though it does take certain elements from a variety of actual languages. The translator above is as comprehensive as possible, but things do slip through the cracks so if there is a word you find that does not translate, please contact Willow either on Discord or Jcink and she will add it to the translator as soon as possible.
Elves and faeries both use this language exclusively when speaking to each other, although they are capable of speaking to the other races in their respective languages as well. They are both fluent in it, as it is their native tongue and the one they hear constantly growing up. All other races must learn this language if they wish to perform magic. The amount of magic they can perform is limited to their knowledge of Arsatena.
Obviously, the pronunciation doesn't matter too much since you will not be speaking it out loud. However, if you're interested in how I pronounce words in my head, just ask!
