Bukittinggi is a city full of history. Located in the center of West Sumatra Province, The city of Bukittinggi offers visitors special traditional foods and culture. The city sits at the top of hills with this reason the city is named "Bukittinggi" which translated to high hills. Bukittinggi is one of the special cities in Indonesia. In 1948, Bukittingi was the capital city of Indonesia after the the establishment of "Emergency Government of the Republic of Indonesia" or PDRI. There were a lot of Indonesian heroes who come from Bukittingi. The first vice president of Indonesia, Moh Hatta came from this beautiful city. To honor him, a palace was built for him to live in. Bukittingi was also pointed as the capital of Sumatra Province, before the partition of provinces in Indonesia, the main and surrounding island of Sumatra was 1 province, and Bukittingi was the capital city. The development in economy and population made Bukittinggi a hectic city since the Dutch colonial period. The Dutch also gave the title of Parijs van Sumatra to Bukittinggi before giving it to Medan.

Jam Gadang, is the most popular landmark of Bukittinggi. Located in Sabai Nan Aluih Park, Jam Gadang built by the Dutch near Pasar Ateh and the palace of Mohammad Hatta. The clock tower was built in 1926 as a gift from Queen Wilhelmina to the city's controleur. The local people compare Jam Gadang with Bigben, with the reason that the machine used by both clock towers are only produced for both Jam Gadang and Bigben. The clock tower has its uniqueness, the clock uses "IIII" rather than the actual 4th number in roman (IV). The local people believe the reason for the unique number of 4 in Jam Gadang is to honor the four people that passed away from the work accident.

Cover with red, black, and yellow, along With the spired roof identic with the Minangkabau culture, Jembatan Limpapeh becomes the icon of the glamours of Minang culture. The word "Limpapeh" refers to a mother. The word choose with the reason where in Minangkabau the society follows a Matrilineally system. With the social system that Minangkabau follows, the culture of Minang is unique compared with other ethnicities in Indonesia. In Minangkabau, family names come from the mother to their children, the mother is the most respected in the family, this is the reason many tourists are interested in the culture of Minangkabau.
