Chapter One
Chapter One
We're human in a nutshell. But little know that only human creatures seek identity. Here's our first step to knowing ourselves, and who we truly are.
Let me make an introduction. My name is Mr. Roki, your English B teacher. I was born in Bandung. But I grew up in another city, Cilegon.
I got my title in English education from Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. For years, I have been teaching English. I've met students X, Y, and Z. But the ones that stand on the top share similar characteristics - resilient, good communicator, good leadership quality, dare to speak, and trustworthy. After years of study, I'm ashtounded with how the world is shaped through a language.
A language is not just words. It's a culture, a tradition, a unification of a community, a whole history that creates what a community is. It's all embodied in a language," Noam Chomsky
Language is not only a thing, it's capable of more than just a thing. It shapes my world; It makes peace and war. It not only makes you feel welcomed and loved, but it also can make you feel hated and damned. On top of that, what interests me about language is that we can freely choose what language we want to use so that we can be the person we want. I think that's one of the greatest gifts God has ever given to His creation. To bring happiness is how I chose to use my language. Let's start with that.
You know what, one day, a student of mine got close and asked me a question "Why do I teach English?" I answered, "I have my personal reasons to be a teacher" obviously. Perhaps, because I was thinking it wouldn't kill anybody so I learned the language.
It starts with nothing serious. Really. Eventually, everything goes with the flow. Bit by bit, my vocab bank increases. But I still struggle with expressing my feeling even today.
Becoming a nazi grammar is not my thing. So don't worry, whenever you made mistakes, remember, we're on the track to learning and I understand your hardship. Besides, language is a medium of communication. Your message is more important than the form. It doesn't mean you need not take care of your grammar too. You do have to, but there are things that are more important once you know them.
I'm glad to have mastered English. I can live my life to the fullest. Not only that English has brought me to our meeting today, but also opened some doors to understanding the meaning of life better. And here I'm teaching you some English. I believe that learning in this room will bring you to some point in your life as well. Best of luck, Sweet Souls.
