Molding minds shaping the future; one child at a time.
The teaching and learning experience must be engaging and effective; whether it's face to face or virtual. In order for this to be so, as educators we have to incorporate manipulatives and charts in the process. Each child has a unique learning style and as such we must endeavour to cater to all; so that no child gets left behind. Below are some of the manipulatives that can be found and were used both in the physical and virtual space.
Manipulatives used in Face to Face Classes
Abacus
Addition of tens and ones using Dienes Blocks.
Hundreds, tens and ones chart-
each student had to create his/her own card so as to be a part of the process.
Creating samples of real life objects- so as to link real life experiences with the classroom-
bottle covers for counters, paper plates or plastic cups- were used to teach sets.
Print-rich environment is a must- Kindergarten classroom
Pictures showing the Literacy corner-decked with games, books, charts, writing materials and flash cards. These were used in class' whether to share stories, write stories, build words or whatever other concepts could be associated with the corner.
A print-rich environment is crucial.
This game/activity aims at developing students phonemic awareness- letter sounds and also the ability to spell. The game was also used to concretize certain concepts taught in class like rhyming words. A word would be placed on the box and students given an opportunity to create a word that rhymes with the one given.
The charts were interactive so as to allow the students to manipulate them, whether within class time or on their time. Learning is an on-going process.
Writing is crucial- students are given the opportunity to write their version of the story in the reading corner; while others are given the opportunity to view.
Samples of charts used within the teaching and learning process- during face to face classes. Some of these were also taken home and used to enhance teaching and learning within the virtual space.
Manipulatives used in Virtual Class
Students and parents are encourage to create whatever manipulatives are used in the virtual space, so that they can engage in hands-on activities.
They are also encourage to create charts for various subjects/concepts to help with reinforcement and also for interactions.
The manipulatives are created before class or concept is taught.
