“When the howls sound. Be silent. When the beast hunts. Hold firm. When it comes for you, find its heart with silver.”
- Runaharr saying.
Please be aware that this hybrid race may be difficult to play due to the limitations of it. We encourage people to thoroughly read over this lore if they choose this “race”.
What was once the ravings of madmen and whispered tales dismissed as tales designed to frighten people was something that became known as a terrible truth. First spotted along the rim of the Runaharrani Tundra, reports from hunter tribes of the snowy plains begane to become more common. In the dead of night, howls piercing the quiet of the night as some hellish sound, creatures that seemed to be part man, part wolf hunted the tribes of man. These creatures were vicious, preying on not only the men, but also the women and children, with a brutality that was even beyond that of a rabid beast.
To the shamans of the Sylvan people, these creatures were Varigu, men that were infected by a parasite from beyond the veil that entered an unknowing host. These creatures would remain dormant during the day as their host lived a normal life completely unaware of the invader. But at night, when the influence of the sun waned, the parasite would awaken with a constant need for food, mutating their host into a human-wolf hybrid creature. This constant need for food sent their host into a frenzy, craving the flesh of other creatures, especially that of the mortal races of the world. Stories are whispered of bodies torn apart and the grisly scenes left behind have shaken some of the most hardened veterans.
Once the sun rises, the parasite releases its hold over the host causing them to revert to their human form, with no memory of what happened over the course of the evening these afflicted are able to continue on with their lives, unknowing. However if a host becomes aware of the parasite, and is able to exert their will to overpower the urges of the creature, refusing to feed on others will cause the parasite to devour the host until it dies. Without a host, the parasite cannot survive, and the death of a host is the death of the parasite as well. Some that have become aware choose to lead solitary lives far from others as it can take years to learn how to manage the urges of the parasite.
There have been several attempts to drive parasites from their mutated hosts, with the only known and effective material being silver which has been discovered to be poisonous to the creatures. When introduced into the host's bloodstream, silver will cause the parasite to detach and seek to exit the host as it becomes less hospitable to the creature. Thankfully the only known hosts of these parasites have been that of Alva and Humans, no others having been affected by the parasitic creatures.
Much of this information is dependent on the original race of your character. As this is something of a hybrid race, please see the entries of these races for more information for your character.
During the day these people are indistinguishable from their people, being that of the Human races or the Alva. At night, their appearance becomes something between that of a wolf and a man.
While the races that these afflicted people come from can live long lives, the lifespan of a Varigu generally is quite short due to outside factors. Such creatures are often hunted as soon as they are discovered and unless their activities are kept in remote areas, it is difficult to keep them hidden.

While more common in the south where the Deadlands and Runaharrani Tundra’s unstable nature allows more incursions from the veil, these parasitic creatures have been found across the known world.
