what if cat hadn't gotten caught by the police? where would she be, what would she be doing? what would she have become? the harsh truth is that the ring - that copper - would clench a tighter fist about her, holding her back from escape. and this cat is not better just because she avoided juvie and hackett. she is still broken, she's just broken in a different way. cat is more heartless, more susceptible to anger and violence. she isn't skittering morals anymore, she is fully uncaring of them.
and she is plotting. quietly. but her goal is to one day eliminate copper. to take the ring for herself? to run and never look back without fear of him breathing down her neck? she doesn't really know. all she knows is unlearning the obedience copper has instilled in her isn't as easy as slitting a throat.

her story is pretty much the same. at least until she's fifteen. instead of being caught by the police after attacking her uncle, cat managed to escape. still angry, still resentful and without closure... she broke for a bit of time. temporarily falling apart, cat infuriated copper with her unwillingness and disobedience. it wasn't that she wanted to ignore his orders, however, she just didn't have the energy to follow through. stealing became a chore, much less even waking up. and as she became more and more useless to him, he became less and less cautious about keeping her alive. nearly drowning her, breaking some ribs, and knocking her out various times, he pushed her to the brink.
from her realm of pain, she finally snapped. survival instincts kicked in, and she one day fought back. too weak from lack of eating and moving, she was easily struck down. yet, copper noticed that the spark was back, and he took full advantage of it. once she regained her energy, he no longer let her pick and choose some of her tasks, he pressed forward with her training, pressed forward with his tactics. with a loss of faith in herself, in her life, in everything, cat embraced what he gave her. the training, the skills. killing more, fighting more. the ring didn't fall apart because with cat still there, margie didn't snap. the blonde woman, flint, tinderbox... all are still around to watch cat spiral further.
morals came to mean nothing, but she also internalized her anger. let it grow and build. the hurt and anguish over her family and the family she had wanted in amy and jon... it's a fire burning slowly in her stomach. the idea came to her in the midst of the night. she was going to kill copper. and after margie's body was found, after flint and tinderbox both somehow slipped from everyone's gaze, the loneliness that consumed her solidified her decision.
she would wait. patiently. until the moment to strike would come, until she could somehow ignore the conditioning and need to obey instilled in her being. and what she would do after copper was dead is a mystery. she doesn't know, doesn't care. she just knows someone needs to pay, and cat won't put the blame on herself.
