born of the sea, cat is mermaid of incredible power. while young, she was barely accepted by her sisters and brothers. despite this, she also felt at odds with them, an outcast... which she learned was due to the fact she's half human. mermaids are rather feral creatures, though actively hunting humans isn't in their nature anymore. most care less about these two legged beings and ignore them in favor of remainig safe within the depths of the ocean. every once and a while, they make a good meal but usually only if the territory is threatened. such was the case when the pirate known as copper attacked with crew. taking the powerful beings was his very plan, and he was more than successful when he even went on to train the young but powerful creature he caught when she followed her sisters into battle. years would pass under his tyranny, but fate would eventually give her an escape... and from there, her tale unfolds
LOCATION ;; on the seas or ports she can slip into without issue

born to a mermaid who managed to fall in love with a human, cat, born as sarah, never knew her father. he was someone on land with whom her mother lost contact with after she returned to the sea. cadence would not stay on shore to be with him despite her complex feelings while she knew the harsh life of the ocean would not and could not be his home ( consumed by instinct, sirens did not often feel nor understand love, but cadence somehow managed the former if not the latter ). mermaids live within the depths of the oceans, surviving in their clans. they work similarly to lions, and it is a female who rules them, as well. the females are also generally the strongest in their magic, with males serving as mates and potential guardians in attack. they have their own magic, but it's weaker. their physical strength is what makes them powerful in their own right. feeding on humans for all mermaids is rare. they're calm and loving creatures to each other and don't go looking for trouble too often, relying on instincts to guide them through survival. most ignore those that sail by. humans that invade, however... they are met with bitter ends.
when sarah turned seven, one such invasion happened. the problem? the pirate leading the capture knew what he was doing. captain copper took many of the mermaids down, nearly wiping out the clan entirely. he utilized an artifact of magic to force the sirens to the surface and make them vulnerable, but he didn't intend to leave with only slaughter to his name. with magic imbued nets, he caught sarah and a number of others alongside killing many, dragging them aboard his ship before sailing from the territory with his prizes.
as her sisters were sold off, killed... had their scales sold... the child would live on his ship for years. forced to learn her magic and use it for copper's own efforts. the items he had in his possession could turn her own trancing magic against her, so he and his crew were immune to her song. she often was put under by her reversed magic, then thrown into the briny depths to regain her strength. without her own self control, she always returned to copper's side, a vacant eyed, obedient beast of his to control. eventually, he had her conditioned to obey, though the scars and torments on her body reveal why she succumbed. a majority of her scales in mermaid form were ripped from her, leaving her bloody and in agony. they were sold, traded, whatever. copper made fortunes. and her magic in battle and pillaging were just as successful.
angry, struggling to defy him, and needing an escape, cat learned to play her part and bide her time. she had taken on the new name as the crew had teasingly begun to call her "catfish" for no reason other than it amused them. yet, the name stuck and got shortened. cat was a weapon, and she was ready to turn on her user. but he had the upper hand with his magical items. at least until she was sixteen. that was when they got into battle with an enemy ship. a ghost ship, run by a cursed captain. copper was taken off guard by the difficulty of the battle, and even cat's magic was hardly able to affect the crew as fog spilled about the area. taking her chance, cat slipped to her master's quarters, destroying what bound her to him. with her freedom gained, she was the one to slit his throat, coming up behind and doing it right before the eyes of the cursed captain. the other man was shocked, allowing her to flee, and dove into the sea before anything more could be done.
cat intended to stay there. she found other strays like herself and formed a weak band of sisters. with her fury driving her, the younger mermaid led them into a new life. a life of hunting pirates. of drowning and devouring them. it never brought her peace, but she did it regardless. eventually, she toned it down. instead of actively seeking those she considered monsters out, they limited it to just those that came within their territory. it was how she met captain scott, whose sword of lightning turned out to be an issue. now seventeen at this point, she had had a year to try and mature. she listened to him and made agreement with him for the sake of protecting her sisters from his strange weapon. returning to the ocean, she continued on with her life until sickness started settling in. it had never occurred to her that all her life she had gone between land and sea ( her mother always bringing her to the shore when she was little ). now, strictly residing within the waters, her human half was growing ill. weakened, cat set out to find help. a sea witch named laila was well known to those of the ocean, and it was to this woman she went.
whilst meeting with the witch, captain scott would make his appearance, being a dear friend to the woman himself. it was laila who came up with the idea for them to join forces. being on a ship would allow cat to easily go between land and sea, it would give her great use of her magic and allow her to take out her bubbling anger. for scott, he would have a powerful mermaid on his side. the two took much persuading but eventually formed a deal. it started out with her as a second mate to him, but a growing romance soon altered that. now cat serves as a captain alongside him, and the two rule the seas. the captain who controls lightning and the mermaid who the waves bow to.
she's still rather rough looking in her human form. wild hair, oversized clothes. she wears pants and a large, long sleeved coat. her hair is usually half up, most of it untamable even with a band. she sports the same scars in this alongside a few new ones, including a slice across her cheek. she's never been caught so she isn't branded, and she doesn't much care for tattoos or fancy jewels upon her person. she does like a red bandana around the head. a belt helps to hold her knives, but she tends to default to magic first and foremost. boots go all the way up her calves, ending just below the knees. for an idea of what she wears, see this image.
as a mermaid, cat has a long, swan-like tail. the red, luminous color is patchy, as her scales have undergone a lot of trauma, many of which were ripped away painfully. some new ones have grown in in places, but are now more of a crimson, like they were dipped in blood. in some places, there are no scales at all and pink, softened flesh is on full display. the end of her tail is shredded, but she's still able to move easily enough and use the currents to push her if need be.
siren song. due to being half human, her song isn't quite as effective. but she can entrance men, leaving them in a state of confusion or sometimes guiding them to where she wants them to go. however, she's a bit easier to tune out and cannot entirely throw them into delusions
cat's strongest power is her water bending and it's what makes her a threat. she can control the very tides around her, freeze water or even steam it to boiling hot. using it like a whip is one of her favorite moves. she often keeps a canteen on her hip with water just in case she ventures too far inland, but she can pull from the humidity in the air, as well. being half human has given her some mental capacity above her more feral sisters, which is what unlocked her potential to control water better
minor healing magic. she can heal all wounds to a certain degree. fatal wounds are trickier since she can heal them to critical... from there it's luck and actual skill to save someone. however, she's been able to keep most of their crew alive with these tactics
increased physical strength. despite being 4'9" still in this verse, she could move an entire canon on her own
minor control/communication with marine life. she loves bringing sharks around to feed her enemies to
enhanced hearing. due to the darkness of being underwater, her hearing is probably her best sense. her taste is also rather superior. her sight is average. good enough, but not all that much more than a human's
shifting. can shift between human and mermaid form on her own free will rather than just whatever the elements expose her to. unfortunately she needs to utilize both forms every so often. being in the water too long as a mermaid will weaken her while also being human for too long can do so
cat and scott are so in love and in sync that when they fight enemy pirates, they're often moving together in almost a dance. they play off each other exceptionally and so one tactic most opponents usually try is to separate them. it rarely works out regardless
sword fighting is actually not something cat is notorious for. she knows how to wield one but she prefers her magic or fast attacks with her knives - up close or at a distance
due to scott's story of growing up, she and scott and their crew rarely attack villages with means to destroy. they loot and plunder for money and valuables, but only kill if attacked and never take hostages. they treat even the lowest member on their ship with respect
alister does not exist in this verse, cat is an only child. her father is in jail
