Long Ago, enraged by what he felt was unfair treatment, Basut, the first StarShooter, lashed out against his bretheren and the pantheon of Gods. In his rage and greed he decided to steal what he felt was owed him by the Gods, the magic awarded to the other StarDragons in the great race. He approached the Shrine of the Seven Stars, guarded by the first StarWeaver, who spoke to him his usual cautionary tale. Despite the Weaver's best effords, the Shooter could not be consoled. In Basut's rage he attached the Weaver, stealing his magic for himself, and thus ending the Weaver's life.
The first murder.
Helgin sought to make a second, carving his fury into Basut in a great battle that left the headstrong Shooter inches from death, Hyth, stricken with grief, defended Basut from her husband, unable to handle a second tragedy. It is said the Shooter's blood shed by the claws of Helgin, and the tears caused by Hyth's sorrow was what created Basut's Blood & Hyth's Tears.
Basut's Blood is mined as a deep red ore. Often times the ore goes unnoticed, assumed to be the same as the dark rock around it. Found deep in the earth's crust, Basut's Blood is not to much rare, but exceedingly difficult to find and mine. Given that it's the Crafters who populate beneath the surface, they're the ones who come across it the most. Due to engineering nature of Crafters, they found they could make the ore into the tools used to modify and carve the otherwise extremely hard to crack gems all StarDragons possess, where as other materials couldn't do the trick.
Where Crafters sought to use this ore for their creative endeavors, Basut's Blood was eventually found to have darker properties. When melted down, the ore takes on a viscous state- blood like in nature, hence the name. Once liquid it does not resolidify, leading scientists to believe it solidified only over a long period of time under the pressure of the earth. A thin coat around a gem vcan negate the binding floating magic a Weaver and Dasher's main gem possesses, making it easy to remove without killing the StarDragon; this places them into a more docile state seperated from their life force. Basut's Blood can also be coated around non-floating gems, which keeps the magic contained inside even after being fully removed from the StarDragon.
While removing all the gems from a StarDragon can cause that dragon to die, the magic remains when extracted using Basut's Blood. This has caused Basut's Blood to be highly coveted by StarShooters, who use it to keep Dashers and Weavers in check, and harvest gems to use the magic to power their weapon and technology.
Given how difficult it is to get one's hands on Basut's Blood, when used for harvesting, it's diluted with oils or tars or implimented into harvesting tools, much like crafter gemcarvers. A plus for the Shooters and a terrible plight on others, as long as the vehicle being used to cover the gem is infused with Basut's Blood, not much is needed to do the job- allowing a Shooter to extend the use of a single chunk of ore for some time.
Originally thought to be a gemstone rather than an ore, Hyth's Tears is a translucent, pearlescent ore often found near Basut's Blood. First found by Crafters as well, and given its close proximity of Basut's Blood, was originally assumed to have the same properties. The unusual ore was found to be too soft to carve though, and could not be used to harm or remove gems. When melted down and applied to cracked gems however, Crafters found that it could 'mend' damage done to a life gem. Hyth's Tears take on the colour of the gem it is mending and does not further damage the gem when hardening into the cracks.
Unlike Basut's Blood, Hyth's Tears cannot be diluted and must be used whole and purified... which leads it to be harder to get one's hands on, and drives the value of the life saving mineral very high.
When mixed with Basut's Blood the two create a volitile acid that's instantaneous in forming and eat through anything- possibly a representation of Helgin's rage over Hyth's tears being tainted by the scorn child's blood. Due to wasting both valuable resources, combining them is a mistake rarely made.
