Lección 1-0
Basic Training:
Stories & Cognates
Communication and Other Objectives:
INPUT! Students will get as much (beginner-level) Spanish input from the teacher as possible -- lots of beginner listening and reading!
Build an awareness of and familiarity with the high number of cognates in Spanish.
Use the lists of cognates, as well as other target vocabulary, to learn how to pronounce any word in Spanish.
(Spanish is very consistent, and the majority of words can be spelled correctly the first time that the word is heard.)Develop a beginner's understanding of the stress of each word (accent rules), in order to aid with more correct pronunciation.
Become very comfortable with understanding the meaning of Spanish interrogatives (question words).
Learn what "language proficiency" means, and understand how to use Quizlet most effectively to work toward lasting proficiency.
Use the alphabet vocabulary as a lower-stakes opportunity to evaluate what kind of studying is most effective for each individual student. (Most students overwhelmingly prefer the automatic, corrective feedback of Quizlet, but some prefer or need to additionally write out repetitions by hand.)
Read and listen at length in Spanish (The teacher keeps it comprehensible!)
Provide students the needed phrases to communicate their most basic classroom needs in Spanish.
Begin to practice writing and speaking in Spanish by retelling stories heard or read in class.
Grammar Objectives:
Acquire 40+ high-frequency structures (small phrases, such as "she sees it")
Gain familiarity with all the high-frequency verbs needed for Lec. 1's "Irregular 'yo' song"
