11th Grade Required Meetings w/Counselor

PSAT/NMSQT Exam (Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2022 @ Hillside):

The PSAT/NMSQT Exam has two purposes:

1. It is PRACTICE for the SAT, which you will typically take in the spring of your junior year.

2. It is a one-time opportunity to participate in the National Merit Scholarship contest.

Most students find it especially helpful to familiarize themselves with the organization of the exam and the types of questions that they will see. You can take four, free practice exams online for the PSAT/NMSQT. Two of the practice exams are listed as PSAT/NMSQT, and two are listed as PSAT 10; truthfully, the exams are identical, so all four exams are relevant. Khan Academy also has extensive SAT practice available.

PSAT/NMSQT Info.:

  • Hillside's School Code: 480697

  • PSAT cost: $17 (check written out to Hillside Student Community; we send in a check for all)

  • Scores range from 320-1520

  • No online registration is needed. HSC has already "registered" Juniors. Students will each fill out their identifying information on their exam sheets days ahead of the exam during a lunch period with the Counselor.

  • Note the strict calculator policy: PSAT/NMSQT

Seattle National College Fair (Friday, Nov. 5, 2022, 9-12am, Sat., Nov. 5 12-4pm)

Seattle Performing and Visual Arts College Fair (Thursday, Sept. 29, 2022, 7-9pm)

Consider attending these free events. Representatives from an impressive number of universities will be in attendance. This is a great opportunity to directly speak with representatives of the universities that most interest you. As the event can be a bit dizzying without a "plan" in mind, know which specific colleges' booths you would like to visit and prepare some specific questions that will be helpful to have answered.

SAT at School Exam (Wednesday, March 1, 2023 & Wednesday, March 22, 2023 )

Hillside is excited to be able to offer our students two on-site 'SAT at School' exams again this year! Students may take one or both exams. Taking both exams might open up superscoring to you.

SAT Info.:

  • Hillside's School Code: 480697

  • SAT cost: $54 (check written out to Hillside Student Community; we send in a check for all)

  • Scores range from 400-1600

  • No online registration is needed. HSC has already "registered" Juniors. Students will each fill out their identifying information on their exam sheets days ahead of the exam during a lunch period with the Counselor.

  • Note the strict calculator policy: PSAT/NMSQT

Junior Project:

Juniors will conduct an independent research project of their choosing relating to career interests/possibilities. More details to follow.

Dates:

  • late Sept. (students begin brainstorming JP ideas & crafting SMART goals for them)

  • Oct. - mid-May (Counselor periodically checks in with students on progress. )

  • mid-May - late May (Juniors individually rehearse their JP project with the Counselor)

  • early June (Juniors individually present their Junior Project to the school)

This is a well thought-out mini-curriculum that guides students, starting in 7th/8th grade, through thinking about personal strengths, career interests, academic paths, etc. Hillside will be using a slightly abridged version of the plan (no state testing, for example). Students will typically meet with the Counselor during Study Hall or lunch to work on the required activities.

More info. for specific HS&B activities/dates to be posted at a later date.
