Vlacha

Greece

NOTE:- When you have danced (A ) ( B ), quickly face to the right with

feet together, wait for a brief pause then start again at ( A ) just

after the singing starts. If you start too quickly then you are out of

step with the music for the rest of the dance.

Yannis Parios - Horepsete Horepsete - a tune originally from the island of Naxos in the village of Komiaka. This tune is not regarded as the authentic Vlacha dance music. It seems the tune is most closely associated with the Vitzilaios dynasty of musicians. However the Foster and Inverloch groups happily dance Vlacha to this tune.

The song Horepsete Horepsete translates roughly as - Dance dance and enjoy youth because in this world you will not find it again. Give it all to the dance, this earth will eat us up , give it all to the dance. Whoever has a good heart and parties regularly only they will enjoy this false world. This earth which we tread, we will all enter. Dance dance don’t feel sorry for your shoes for they will rest up at night when you sleep.

This information and translation was given to us by Joe Graziosi. He lives in the US and has been a teacher of Greek dance there for about 5 decades.

The version we are using is on the DVD International Folkdances 2007, compiled by Andre van de Plas.
