Popular dance of Greek origin however also Serbian and other Balkan influences to the dance

Zorba/Sirtaki is a mixture of the slow and fast versions of the hasapiko dance....the full extent of the dance includes not only the steps we dance at class, but also includes hops and leaps (the slow version = 4/4 meter; the fast = 2/4 meter)

The dance and music by composer Mikis Theodorakis are also called Zorba's dance or the dance of Zorba, and was famously featured in the movie Zorba the Greek, starring Anthony Quinn.

Traditionally it is danced by males only, who put their arms around each others shoulders. It is often danced in a semi circle, and there is a lead dancer at the head of the semi circle, who sometimes improvises different moves for the others to follow. Historically if men and women dance, they held a handkerchief to link them, as unmarried men and women were not permitted to touch bare skin.

The dance we do is based on the fast and simple version of the Sirtaki dance. It starts slowly, then as the music speeds up, dancers bounce on their heels and take smaller steps.
