Some historians and archeologists claim that the ancestors of modern Thai people have been in Thailand for a very long time. Historians like Suchit Wongthet have argued that at least some of the ancestors of modern day Thai people have been here for at least 3,500 years. He believes this is true because of the discovery of the ancient village of Ban Chiang, where people lived thousands of years ago.
Suchit, however, does believes that the answer to where Thai people came from is very complex (complicated). It is true that some of the ancestors of Thai people have been here for thousands of years. However, those people were later joined by people from other parts of the world. Suchit does believes that some of the ancestors of Thai people came from Guangxi, and that the Tai language may have originated there. The reason he believes this is because he took a trip to this province and was surprised at how similar their language was to modern Thai language. Furthermore, Suchit says that many Thai people today have ancestors from other parts of China, as well as Cambodia, Myanmar, etc. Therefore, we need to take all of these things into consideration when talking about where the ancestors of Thai people came from.
Suchit, therefore, does not try to trace the history of a Tai race. He believes that Thai people are not a homogenous group. That means that they are not all the same. Modern Thai people do not all have one common ancestry. This theory, therefore, focuses not on the origins of Tai people, but on the origins of Thai people.
