Geographical Range and Important Cities
The Dvaravati kingdom was quite large. In the north, it extended as far as Hariphunchai (modern day Lamphun province). In the norther-east, it stretched across into the Korat Plateau (Isaan), and in the south it went as far as the Isthmus of Kra (around modern day Chumphon province). Most cities in the kingdom were located near a river, much like cities in earlier civilizations that we have learned about.
The most important city in Dvaravati was Nakorn Pathom. This was likely the political and religious center of the kingdom, and the king probably lived here. The most important architectural feature of the city is Phra Pathom Chedi, which was likely built in the 6th century, though some legends say that it was built earlier. Because of its importance, it is possibly that the king of Dvaravati lived in Nakhon Pathom.
