The Khmer Empire, like Dvaravati and Srivijaya, was influenced by Indian culture, especially in regards to religion. Some Khmer kings followed Hinduism, while others followed Mahayana Buddhism. In fact, Khmer kings often claimed to be living incarnations of Hindu gods like Shiva or Vishnu and the Khmer people considered them Devarajas, of God-kings, much like the kings of Srivijaya. They were known as devarajas (god-kings). Other kings were not Hindu, but Buddhist, and modelled themselves on bodhisattvas instead. They were known as dharmarajas.
