Green waste - green waste refers to anything compostable. There are designated trash cans throughout the Arboretum that are labeled for green waste. Do NOT put trash or recyclables in these trash cans. When a trash can for green waste is full, it should be emptied into a green tote that is located in the pumphouse/garage parking area (photo below). If all those green tote are full, grab an empty green tote from the area on the south side of the city garage and move it next to the full totes. Do NOT put green waste in the totes that are outside the fence of the pumphouse/garage parking area.
Full green totes should be placed on Ninth Ave. in the red zone in front of the Sundial garden on Sunday evening and Wednesday evening for pickup on Monday morning and Thursday morning. Generally, SMAS maintenance staff will move the totes to the street and retrieve them. However, if you fill a large number of green totes, e.g., for a large pruning job, it would be helpful if your crew moves them to the street.
Trash - There are designed trash cans throughout the Arboretum labeled specifically for trash. When one is full, it should be emptied in one of the black totes located behind the back doors of the pumphouse. If a tote is full, swap it with a less full one from the picnic area just west of the garage.
Recyclables - These should be placed in the blue tote located behind the back doors of the pumphouse. If one is full, take an empty one from the area just south of the city garage. As with compost, recyclables should be placed curbside on Ninth Ave. on Sunday evening or Wednesday evening.
Used perlite and vermiculite - These can be reused at the discretion of the volunteer. If they are to be discarded, consider them trash. Do not place it in the compost or recycling.
Used soil - This can be reused at the discretion of the volunteer. If it is to be discarded, consider it trash not compost. If roots are entangled in the soil, attempt to dislodge the soil from the roots and place the roots in compost. Try to limit the amount of soil in the compost totes.
