Active Projects

Greenhouse Renovation - The greenhouses need a major renovation or replacement. As part of this project, the Potting Shed may be enlarged. 

Victorian Garden Renovation - The Victorian Garden is attractive but could be made more functional as a venue to rentals. Also the large amount of lawn wastes water. The first phase of this project is to explore changes to make the garden more useful while retaining its character. The second phase will be to select desired changes and devise a schedule to implement them. 

Nursery Entrance Renovation - The north gate entrance to the nursery is functional but not inviting. This project will replace the sliding chain link fence with something more attractive, make the entrance wider, place a sign above the gate visible from the great lawn and possibly create a direct path from the road around the lawn to the north gate. 

Fairy Garden Renovation - The Fairy Garden will be renovated by replacing the existing houses and plantings with decor and plants more appealing to children. The new garden will also be easier to maintain. Pat is leading this project.

Continual Projects

Demonstration Garden - There are two demonstration gardens in the Victorian Garden, one for sun plants, the other for shade plants. These gardens are maintained by Francesca.

North Gate Garden - The garden in front of the nursery north gate is maintained by Ed. 

Sundial Garden - The garden at the park entrance at Ninth and Palm Aves. is maintained by Kevin.

Artists in Residence - John Sutti is using the Pumphouse as an art gallery. He is displaying some of his works and, on a rotating basis, brings in fellow artists. He has also placed some of his works on pedestals within the Victorian Garden. His gallery is open 10am-3pm Friday through Sunday. SMAS gets a portion of the sale price of any piece sold. Typically, the shows run in the fall and winter months.

Completed Projects

Rose Garden Arbor - Two new arbors will be placed in the Rose Garden to provide details about the garden. (Irv led this).

Central Park Centennial - To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Central Park, the pumphouse will house an exhibit showcasing the history of the park.

Pumphouse Renovation - The pumphouse will be remodeled to create one large meeting room out of the existing three separate rooms (Carol is led this).

Palm Avenue Entrance - In collaboration with the City of San Mateo, the garden around the Central Park sign at Palm and 9th was renovated (Cammie led this).
