Webinar: Dark Matter and Particle Physics

Date/Time: Thursday, January 21, 2021, 11:00am IST (Indian Standard Time)

Speaker: Dr. Alakabha Datta, Associate Professor of Physics, University of Mississippi, USA

Abstract: There is compelling evidence that about 25% of the matter in the Universe is of unknown nature known as dark matter. Ordinary matter that makes up the planets, stars and galaxies make up only around 5% of the matter in the Universe. Trying to understand the properties of dark matter is the one of the biggest challenges in physics. It is believed that dark matter is some unknown particle that is present in extension of the standard model of particle physics. After a short introduction to the evidence of dark matter I will discuss the standard model of particle physics and how physicists are trying to probe the dark matter particles.

Bio: Dr. Datta is an associate professor of Physics at the University of Mississippi, USA. He completed his Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Hawaii, USA.

Target Audience: This is for a wider audience. In particular, higher secondary and college students and teachers are welcome.
