Abstract: In order to meet the continuing demands of wireless networks, and to bring connectivity to the underserved, new spectrum (radio frequencies that wireless signals traverse) will be required. But, how well do we know the current spectrum usage? Wireless carriers share only the minimal details of their deployments and even regulatory agencies like the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the US do not have up-to-date and accurate broadband maps. On the other hand, smartphones today can capture very detailed information about wireless networks: signal strengths, number of base-stations visible etc. This talk will describe how apps on Android phones can be built and used by the average consumer to create granular broadband maps and quantify cellular and Wi-Fi networks today.

Bio: Monisha Ghosh is currently Research Professor at University of Chicago, USA and will be joining as Professor of Electrical Engineering at University of Notre Dame, USA in January 2022. She earlier served as the Chief Technology Officer at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), USA and Program Director at the National Science Foundation, USA. Her prior work experience in industrial R&D has been at Interdigital, Philips Research, and Bell Laboratories on wireless systems such as the HDTV broadcast standard, cable standardization, and cognitive radio for the TV White Spaces. She earned her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from University of Southern California, USA and her B. Tech degree from Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur, India. She is an IEEE Fellow.

Target Audience: This is for a wider audience. In particular, higher secondary and college students and teachers are welcome.
