Abstract: The session will focus on current ethical issues in healthcare delivery, with a focus decision-making in such areas as end-of-life care and the allocation of scarce medical resources. Current issues, such as the distribution and prioritization of the COVID-19 vaccine will provide a starting point for discussion. Key ethical principles will be used to help guide a lively conversation.

Bio: Dr. Wayne Vaught is Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs and Professor of Philosophy at Utah Valley University, USA. Prior to joining Utah Valley in June 2019, he was Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences and Professor of Philosophy, Medicine and Bioethics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC). He came to UMKC in the fall of 1998 and held a joint appointment between the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Medicine. From 1995 to 1998, he was a faculty member in the Drexel University School of Medicine. His Ph.D. in Philosophy, with a concentration in Medical Ethics, is from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, USA.

Provost Vaught’s primary research is in biomedical ethics, with a focus on ethical issues in pediatrics. He has published in leading ethics journals including The Hastings Center Report, The Journal of Clinical Ethics and Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics. He is co-author of Ethics Across the Professions, Oxford University Press. Provost Vaught regularly taught a popular anchor course “Money, Medicine and Morals” for the UMKC General Education Core.

During his time at UMKC, he could be regularly heard on the radio as one of KCUR’s “Ethics Professors.” In his “free” time Provost Vaught has served on the basketball court refereeing for local high schools.


Target Audience: This is for a wider audience. In particular, higher secondary and college students and teachers are welcome.
