Inquiry statement 探究说明 tànjiū shuōmíng:
Welcome to Mandarin Chinese at our school! We will be learning to use words to interpret and express ideas related to our lives and the lives of people in Chinese-speaking communities. Interpretation of meaning will require receptive skills in listening and reading. Expression of meaning will require productive skills in speaking and writing.
Inquiry questions 探究题 tànjiū tí:
Factual: What study systems can help us learn Chinese?
事实题: 学中文的时候,有什么方法可以帮我们学得更好?
Conceptual: At an early proficiency level, what should learners be able to interpret and express?
概念题: 刚开始学中文的学生应该能听懂、读懂、写和说什么?
Debatable: At an early proficiency level, how accurate should a learner express and interpret meaning?
辩论题: 刚开始学语言的人,说、写、听懂的时候,要多准确才好?

After seeing and hearing the 《bpmf歌》 ("bō pō mō fō gē"), see a printout of the letters and say them all accurately, including "initials" (beginning consonants) and "finals" (ending vowels) (4 pts).
After watching 《YouTube stories 1》, see a printout of the people's pictures and answer the questions you hear about each person with the information you learned from the videos (4 pts).

Text document: 《question words》 + 《YouTube stories 1b》
After studying all the question words in 《question words》, see a printout of the example questions in the ↯2 section (pages 3-4). Underline each question word, write the pinyin and meaning in English just for that question word (4 pts).
After watching 《YouTube stories 1b》, see a printout of the people's pictures and answer the questions you hear about each person with the information you learned from the videos (4 pts).
研究报告 yánjiū bàogào
With continuous advice from your teacher, prepare a visual slideshow presentation based on the following:
choose, or modify, one inquiry question, above,
find answers from valid online sources
keep a copy of links to each source
use online tools (Google Translate, ChatGPT, etc.) to describe the basic information you found to answer the question.
Your slides should include:
your question in Chinese, pinyin, and English
one slide per answer to the question
with one or more images
citations, pasting in
each link to the source of your answer to the question
each online tool used to get the words or sentences used on that slide
Again, check with the teacher frequently on:
- if the question makes sense to you
- if the source of information is okay to use
- if the sentence from the online tool works for your context
期末项目 qīmò xiàngmù
In a visual slide-show presentation to the class, demonstrate your understanding of the Unit 1 and Unit 2 concepts. Check you complete the following:
Organize your presentation around Unit 1 and 2's:
factual inquiry questions (two total)
one conceptual or one debatable from each unit (two total)
visual information from two formative texts from each unit (four total)
text to read aloud from two, three, or four formative texts (20+ / 80+ 字), and tie to inquiry question/s
personal research from your micro-presentation
citation 《》to credit sources where relevant
Use conventional opening, transitions, and closing following our normal speech notes format
You can prepare and look a card with individual words in Chinese characters and/or pinyin but do not read from sentences or phrases, except on slides designed for reading.
Scoring will work as follows:
Speaking (/8): rubric here.
Listening (/8): play video clip and discuss connections to inquiry question/s.
Reading (/8): read text aloud and discuss connections to inquiry question/s.
