How do I segregate?

Segregation is so simple!

Chennai follows the 3 bins concept:

  • Green - All your organic / kitchen waste goes in here. This organic waste can be made into compost either by your apartment or by the GCC, when handed over.

  • Blue - All your recyclable waste like plastic, glass, paper, metals etc., to be disposed in the blue bin.

    • Ensure that the contents of the blue bin are not wet.

    • incase you are disposing of food packaging, ensure that the packets are emptied, rinsed and dried before disposing.

    • incase of items like broken glass or tin cans, ensure that you wrap then well with newspapers before disposing. Do ensure that they broken pieces are wrapped well such that they would not harm anyone till they are processed.

  • Red - All hazardous items like e-waste, sanitary napkins, diapers, medical waste like expired medicines, bandages, masks etc., should be disposed in the red bin.

    • Ensure that you wrap personal hygiene products and medicine bottles properly before disposing.

    • E-waste to be preferably disposed of the specific drives.

    • Ensure that all sharp objects too are wrapped such that they do not harm anyone.

  • Debris and bulk waste - For the disposal of debris and bulk waste like mattresses / furniture, one must contact the GCC. Mattresses can be donated at the specific drive for upcycling.
