Torn Clothes, Footwear and Mattresses Drive - March 2021

After two successful e-waste drive, ROKA saw opportunities in other avenues as well. During the previous drives, many participants had sought help in identifying venues to donate clothes in good and torn condition.

ROKA saw an opportunity to divert all types of clothes, footwear and mattresses from the landfills, for many useful purposes. Since all these are recyclable / upscalable items, it was but inevitable for ROKA to take up the cause. Focus was however specifically on clothes that couldn't be handed down / donated to the needy, and the undergarments. Often such clothes / fabrics ended in the landfills.

Thus, over the weekend of March 13 and 14, 2021, ROKA conducted a yet another successful and very satisfying (in many ways) drive. The 2-day collection held at the Kamaraj Avenue Corporation school had 460 people from across Chennai - from Purasawalkam to Valasaravakkam, Porur to Perungudi, Madipakkam to Medavakkam, came to the venue to donate their items.

The whooping 9.9 METRIC TONNE of clothes were collected and safely handed over to the Little Drops Home for the old/destitute and mentally challenged. While the clothes in good condition was used as is, the torn clothes were processed and made into bed fillings, adult diapers, mops etc.

The 1.8 METRIC TONNE of worn out footwear, mattresses & pillows was sent for recycling to the recycling unit of WasteWinn.

Imagine so much landing at the Kodungaiyur or Perungudi landfill !!!! And that is what ROKA has diverted responsibly. A humble thanks and kudos to each one of the responsible, conscious contributors to this drive. May we grow together in conscious consumption and responsible disposal.
