Tour with the Tricycle

Despite awareness programmes, adoption of source segregation was poor, thus hampering the goal of clean roads. It soon became clear that more supervision was required. Thus, by the third quarter of 2019, volunteers, that included Ms.Janani, Mr.Sridharan, Ms.Lakshmi, Ms.Alagu, Ms.Saranya, Ms.Swathi, Ms.Hemaminakshi started a 'tour with the tricycle'.

The staff of Ramky Enviro staff came on tricycles. Volunteers went around the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Main Roads of Kasturbanagar to:

  • Inspect the bins (specifically the green bin) of each and every apartment. If there is a mixup of waste in the green bin, the same would be informed to the watchman and photos of it would be posted in the residents WhatsApp group, to alert the concerned person representing the apartment.

  • Ensure that the mixed up bin would not be cleared unless sorted.

After the initial hustle and bustle, most of the apartments fell in line with segregation. This led to our next project - Bin-less Beauty and ring wells.

As the quantity of segregated green waste increased, ROKA felt that a micro composting centre (MCC) in the vicinity would provide a insight to the residents to know where and how their waste is turned into 'black gold', the compost. With the help of the Corporation, ROKA identified a small stretch of land near the MRTS Railway Station for this purpose and in November 2019, three well rings were dug to collect green waste from the neighbourhood. In about an year's time, the first batch of compost was harvested from the ring wells.
