Using recycled materials in my artwork is my goal and passion. For this sculpture I had several ideas for using metal and wood to create a piece that could be used as a subject for musical sounds. While on my many travels, I have noticed that when there are drums that kids can play on, there will be much experimenting, loads of sounds and much dancing. I had several pieces that were perfect for using in this sculpture: metal cans, a metal zip board, and a tray table to display all objects. I only needed an assortment of instrumental pieces in which to strike the objects to create the sounds. Each unique striker creates a slightly different tone and I found myself trying new patterns for making up songs. As you play, listen for the tones, see what you create and have fun. There is no limit for imagination.

"Flora" is a part of a series that I have been working on for some time creating fun people from my imagination using recycled materials to give them new life and meaning. She is inspired by my herb garden, my love to cook and especially the challenge of putting together an assortment of materials that complement each other. Her head is a clock for keeping track of cooking time, she has a salad fork and spoon for arms, a cheese board with floral pattern for her body, wooden shoe stretchers for her legs and feet and to tie it all together to form her apron is an old tennis racket frame. She is functional because of the clock but also fun to imagine her as a being an inspiration in the kitchen.
