So you want to learn Japanese.

Online Resources

Check out this Reihoku Blocker's blog on self-study.

This website offers reading materials in various levels. Check it out.

Read the news in simple Japanese and then follow the link for the original Japanese article. You can have the furigana, or you can erase it to practice reading kanji.

Many JETs swear by this website. It's a way to learn Japanese kanji. I've never been able to stick with it, but there are people who have actually finished the whole program.

This website offers a variety of tools for learning Japanese. You can interact with other learners in various ways, or study on your own through quizzes and explanations.

This whole site is in Japanese, but it has all of the grammar points listed by level.

This website is full of materials provided by the Meguro Language Center in Tokyo. There are helpful graphics, quizzes, explanations, study plans, and more. I strongly recommend taking a look.

A website full of famous books translated in other languages including Japanese!

Apps

This is an app where you can talk to native speakers of your target language. Work together to improve your language skills for free. There are other apps that are helpful as well, but this is the one I use.

With the same order as the books, this app can be a great standalone resource or a good pairing with the Basic Kanji Book series. For Android.

Textbooks and Workbooks

This is a link to the Vol. 1 and 2 set. This is a really good book series for mastering kanji.

Intermediate Kanji Book

For Vol 1 click here, and for Vol 2 click here.

They make both a grammar and a kanji book. This series is great for upper level students.

For the original textbook as well as the grammar and kanji focused books, click here.

There are many other textbooks out there as well. The 完全マスター (Kanzen Master) series and the スピードマスター (Speed Master) series are great for preparing for the JLPT.

Youtube Channels

There is an English version of this channel which is great for teaching English class! But this is the Japanese version, which is great for studying Japanese.

Taka has many lessons from basic to advanced. He'll definitely teach you what you need to know.

She has some courses which you can pay for, or you can just watch some of her free content on YouTube!

This page also has a variety of levels of videos. Everyone has their own preference, so find what works for you!

This page is more of a true classroom style teaching. The teachers on this channel are very easy to listen to and learn from. It seems to be mostly geared at intermediate to advanced level Japanese learners.

Dogen is one of my favorite Japanese YouTubers. He teaches Japanese pronunciation, but it's also great practice to just listen to him talk. He's American, but his Japanese is basically perfect. You can also check out his patreon.

Tests and Certifications

The JLPT is a 5 leveled test. Level 5 is the easiest and level 1 is the hardest, but you can get a job outside of JET with about a level 2 or level 1 certification. This is the most widely taken Japanese ability test.

This is a kanji test which Japanese elementary, middle, and some high schoolers take. It's a good way to really check your Japanese kanji writing and reading ability. There are 10 levels.

JTA, or the Japan Translation Association, offers multiple certifications which could help you in your after JET career prospects if you plan on translating.

The BJT is the Business Japanese Certification Test. This certification may be required to obtain certain jobs in the future, but is otherwise not a widely taken test.

Happy studies!
