Medication and Special Leave

Period Pain Meds

There's a large variety of pain meds made specifically for menstruation. Look for the work 生理(せいり) and you should have what you need.

Menstrual Leave

You may have noticed in your contract that you have special leave for menstruation, seirikyu. This can be used, however I recommend against it. Your BoE is not required to pay you for this time off, and it can be an awkward conversation. Instead it's best to take nenkyu or regular vacation days, which are paid. If you are going to a hospital, you can possibly take byokyu or sick leave.

Birth Control (The Pill)

Birth control is hard to get and relatively expensive in Japan unless you can get a gyno to prescribe it for you under insurance for intense period pains or other debilitating menstruation problems.

避妊ピル

Birth Control (IUD)

IUDs will be even harder to find than the pill. It's important to find a doctor with experience in the IUD, or to get this done in your home country.

The Morning After Pill

This is something that you will have to have prescribed for you at your local ladies' clinic.
