Through my studies and work experience, I have demonstrated the ability to understand Safety and Security Competency

1. Demonstrating the ability to develop and implement policies and procedures for safe and secure educational environments
2. Demonstrating the ability to formulate safety and security plans to implement security procedures including an articulated emergency chain of command, safety procedures required by law, law enforcement assistance, communication with the public, and evacuation procedures
3. Demonstrating the ability to identify areas of vulnerability associated with school buses, buildings and groups and formulate a plan to take corrective action
4. Demonstrating understanding of procedural predictability and plan variations where possible
5. Demonstrating the ability to develop plans that connect every student with a school adult, eliminate bullying and profiling and implement recommended threat assessment procedures

Reflection

As a previous site coordinator at the YMCA, I did work with situations that were related to bullying. At the YMCA, every child did not have a school adult, however when behaviors occurred with a student, they were required to go to a YMCA staff member that they trusted (I acted as a trusted adult for some students).

Having the opportunity to work as a graduate assistant has allowed me to create connections with students. I am responsible for calling incoming freshmen and connecting them with two faculty members on campus. This is a great way for newly freshmen to have a support system right when they enter college.

When I was still working at Concordia College, Covid-19 was occurring and students needed to start leaving and everyone was starting to work from home. I got a few emails about how buildings were going to be closing soon and that only specific people were going to be having fobs and/or keys. Because of this, I was able to identify areas of vulnerability.
