general
Learners to participate in their school uniforms
Learners are not allowed to change their speeches…the same must be used from the first round until Nationals. Speeches used previously at National level may not be used again
The same speech may be used for Afrikaans and English, but the speaker to do the translation him-/herself. The same speech may not be used for more than 2 categories.
As from 2019, Gr 0-R will not participate at the National final round. Please encourage them to still participate as this is their experience for when they start primary school and forward.
Please take note of the information and rules for each category.
We have no prescribed themes...participants may use any suitable for their age.
Time of speeches are very important:
Speeches (all individual categories)
Gr R - 3: 2 – 4 minutes
Gr 4 – 7: 4 – 6 minutes
Gr 8 -12: 6 – 8 minutes
Teams (all categories) Please take note that the structure for RR teams remains unchanged. Here we especially refer to the time.
Gr R – 3: 5 – 7 minutes
Gr 4 – 7: 8 – 10 minutes
Gr 8 – 12: 10 – 12 minutes
To keep the prescribed time, some sources can be taken out, as there are competitions who require more than one research per speaker.
ENGLISH FIRST- & ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE
Points of interest during adjudication:
The speech:
Topic to be argumentative and suitable for the speaker’s age
The introduction and conclusion to be effective and strong
Structure and content: clear/logical arguments, research effective/suitable
Research: 3 (one per argument), own examples/opinions
No motivational-, information- or entertainment speeches
The presentation
Is the speaker enthusiastic/confident/convincing?
Voice: natural/clear/pronunciation?
Gestures: natural/suitable/effective?
Eye contact & note handling: natural/comfortable?
Overall Impression
In this category NO props, music, singing and dancing allowed
BILINGUAL
These speeches to be 50% Afrikaans and 50% English. We prefer that the first half to be in die speaker’s first language and the other half in his/her additional language.

The speech:
Topic to be argumentative and suitable for the speaker’s age
The introduction and conclusion to be effective and strong
Structure and content: clear/logical arguments, research effective/suitable
Speech to be 50% English and 50% Afrikaans
Research: 3 (one per argument), own examples/opinions

Is the speaker enthusiastic/confident?
Voice: natural/clear/pronunciation
Gestures: natural/effective/suitable
Note handling and eye contact: natural/comfortable
Overall Impression

TEAMS - AFRIKAANS & ENGLISH
Please note that structure remains unchanged for RR (attention to time)
Teams can consist of 2-4 members and teamwork are important. Learners to participate in school uniform. If, for example a grade 10 learner participate in the team of grade 12 learners, adjudication will be done according to the highest grade.

The introduction and conclusion to be effective and strong
Structure and content: clear/logical arguments
Research: 3 (one per argument), own examples/opinions
The presentation:
Are the speakers enthusiastic/confident/convincing?

Gestures: natural/suitable/effective?
Note handling and eye contact: natural/comfortable?
Overall Impression
In this category, NO props, music, singing or dancing allowed.
Experimental Individual (English & Afrikaans)
This section is not as strict and formal as the other categories. The speech should still be argumentative. Research are not mandatory, and speakers are encouraged to write their own speeches. They must convince with their own experience and their own opinions. Teams may also participate here (team members of 2-4)

Structure and content: clear/logical arguments

Experimental teams (English & Afrikaans)
This section is not as strict and formal as the other teams. The speech should still be argumentative. Research not mandatory, and speakers are encouraged to write their own speeches. They must convince with their own experience and their own opinions. Team members of 2-4. Teamwork is important.

Reading category
Important notes/guidelines
NO RECITAL OF POEMS ALLOWED
Any section of a book (prose) or poem may be read and must be suitable for the the reader’s age
This section is formal and all participants to wear school uniform.
No gestures and props allowed. The use of reader’s voice is encouraged.
No over-dramatized reading
The reader must introduce him-/herself, the name of the book/poem and the author eg. “I am Rian Smith and will be reading ……… written by …….
Readers must submit a clear copy of the piece to the adjudicator. If not, they will be penalized. This is a reading category and anyone who "recite" a poem will not be adjudicated. No entries for reciting will be accepted.
Beware of books/pieces too big when reading, it can easily look uncomfortable and can affect the eye contact with audience
Participants must read the same piece throughout, in other words from the first round until National. In this section, we are very strict on time, especially during the Provincial- and National finals.
Time is maximum 2 minutes for primary school learners
minimum 1,5 minutes - maximum 3 minutes for high school learners
