Honors Coordination

Key Information Handouts & Representative Projects

  1. I meet with Honors Transfer Program (HTP) faculty every two weeks.

    • I keep meeting notes for the 2022-2023 year

  2. I prepare these checklists each semester, so that students can stay on top of their requirements for the program

  3. I meet with the HTP Advisory Board at least once a semester

    • We discuss and decided needed policies for the program

    • Advisory Board members:

      • Prof. Lindsey Ayotte, Communication Studies

      • Dean Danni Redding Lapuz

      • Joyce Lee, HTP Counselor

      • Dr. Susanne Schubert, Chemistry

      • Chris Woo, SS/CA Program Services Coordinator

  4. I co-hosted these events with the Honors Club:

Evidence of Professional Development Activities

  1. The Undergraduate Symposium of Academic Research (uSOAR) team and I co-organized a Flex Day workshop on the Honors Transfer Program. We had 20+ attendees, and we included a panel promoting undergraduate research

  2. We had 200+ participants, presenters, and attendees at the symposium in Spring 2022

  3. I represent Skyline College as part of the Bay Honors Consortium Council, where I meet with Honors Directors and Faculty Coordinators from all over Northern California. Each month, we meet from 11am-2pm to update each other on the status of our programs. We provide support and share ideas; we share information on research opportunities for our students.

Evidence of Feedback

  1. The feedback and guidance from our HTP Advisory Board was invaluable. Their thoughts have significantly structured the program moving forward, and all changes were made after listening to students' feedback. Last year, we:

  • Approved no entry requirements for applying students

  • Confirmed removing admissions on a provisional basis

  • Created IDST 105 STEM-focused section (thank you, Danni!)

  • Approved summer contracts for all HTP students who completed IDST 105

  1. I met recently with Dean Danni Redding Lapuz to discuss feedback and reports on HTP

    • Here are some statistics that I've gathered about HTP:

      • A majority of our students transfer to UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Davis, and UC Santa Barbara

      • 75 students signed up for Fall 2022 Honors course contracts

        • About 1/3 of students complete their contracts each semester

      • Membership in the UCLA TAP Program is extremely beneficial;

        • In Fall 2022, 121 Skyline students applied to UCLA. 18 of which were HTP students, and 12 of them accepted admission.

        • In Fall 2021, 119 Skyline students applied to UCLA. 13 of which were HTP students, and 9 of them accepted admission.

Statement of Philosophy

After looking at last year's Vision Statement, I believe that some of my vision has shifted, or some of my goals have already been accomplished. I aimed to address these two challenges:

  1. New faculty member learning new processes

        • Fall 2021: I can say that I am more familiar with these HTP processes, and I am anticipating adapting these processes as we transition back to working on-campus. I also hope to grow in terms of learning more about institutional processes.

        • Fall 2022: More faculty are aware of HTP, and more are actively mentoring students. Over 60+ faculty mentor students each semester.

  2. Continuity for Honors students

        • Fall 2021: I think that many students who've been in the program for a while are not familiar with me, and I make myself available to them in office hours, via email, and in one-to-one appointments where we cover HTP services, campus resources, transfer information, and questions they can ask their Counselors.

        • Fall 2022: I implemented student office hours, and I've had regular contact with HTP students. I advise the Honors Club, and they are active on campus (after being mostly online last year).

New goals and priorities moving forward:

  1. To have IDST 105 be a UC-transferrable course

      • Currently, it is only CSU-transferable and I learned the Cañada's Honors Program was able to have their seminar UC-transferable. I'll be incorporating some feedback form them in order to push the course outline through the curriculum committee.

      • Fall 2022: Prof. Susanne Schubert and I are working with Curriculum, Articulation, and Admissions & Records to establish this.

  2. To find a way to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Honors Transfer Program

      • I'll be collaborating with the Honors Club to plan an event, or it can be in conjunction with our Honors Medallion Ceremony

      • Fall 2022: We celebrated in Spring 2022!

Overall

  1. Goals for 2022-2023

    • UC-transferable IDST 105 course

    • Intermediate/advanced Honors Research Seminar

    • Institutionalizing lab time pay for faculty-mentors
