Year 2

Introduction Statement

Dear Tenure Review Committee Members,

Thank you for taking the time to review my Tenure Portfolio in my second year of tenure review.

My world and personal priorities have shifted a lot after my mother passed away. Even though I am back at work and trying my best every day, I am still grieving in big and small ways in the aftermath of losing a light in my life and the glue of my immediate family. Every day is different and changed. It is true for me that things have not been ordinary or normal for quite some time; I feel as though the last two years of my life have been upended. I hope you all can understand why I place this loss and love at the center of my work and whole self.

For this year, I hope to focus on improving my online teaching skills while I am working from home. There are details about what that's like for me throughout this Year 2 portion of my portfolio. I have made connections, while teaching synchronously and asynchronously, with a majority of my students. I've set up a Google voice phone number where students can call or text me, and I've made efforts to call students, mail them books to their home addresses, and meet with them in online office hours.

I hope students will get through this pandemic with introspection and a clear understanding about what this time in shelter-in-place means for them. I hope it will continue to be a point of connection and motivation for achieving equity for myself and Skyline College. I hope my tenure portfolio documents this difficult time and how I was able to navigate it.

My goal this year is to make online everything (instruction and coordination) feasible for students, staff, administrators, and faculty. I hope that my classes and work with the Honors Transfer Program clear a path and pattern that will make the program more visible on campus

Thank you for taking the time to read through my portfolio.

Sincerely,

Janice Sapigao
