In my English 103 "PCN" class,

we practice reading and analyzing plays, writing scenes and scripts, and discussing short stories. I assign students to write their own scenes adapting the stories into plays, which allows them to show understanding anbd memory of the text in order to create something of their own, which shows high-level critical thinking.

We are reading In The Country by fiction writer Mia Alvar. Because In The Country imagines and documents many ineffable parts of Filipino and Filipino American culture, I thought it would be the perfect text from which we could build a lexicon for the Pilipino Cultural Night class.
