Journals allow for personal reflection and connection to course texts.

Here are three journal prompts I've assigned in class as one-page response papers that allow students to further reflect on readings, or to expect a future theme for class discussion.

  1. Write about an important woman in your life.
    • Assigned before we discussed Toni Morrison's work
  2. Reflect on each of the readings that we've read thus far for class. Which reading was the most compelling to you, and why? Include at least three quotes/citations; should be 3-4 paragraphs long.
    • Assigned after we completed the course reading packet
  3. Write a poem in the style of a Jan-Henry Gray poem.
    • Assigned while we were reading the book Documents; helps place students in the position of the author
