I am excited to teach English 161!

I am lucky that I have the opportunity to prompt students into generative writing! After surveying students, I've learned that practically all of the students in my class are genuinely interested in writing, and many struggle with the reality of not having enough time to write. In this class, I approach each student as the creative writer they are, and I hope to impart onto them a sense of and valuable need for community.

I started my preparation for this class in Spring 2021, when I reached out to my (our) wondrous colleague, Prof. Rob Williams. He sent me his syllabus so that I could begin working on the curriculum. It’s been an interesting class to for prep each week (or every few weeks), as I didn’t realize just how much feedback I’d be giving to each student. It’s been a tough transition, as I think creative writing courses require more feedback than the composition classes we teach. I am, however, grateful to the students for allowing me share as many resources as I can with them.

A lot of the students are very active, though some activity has dropped and shifted to turning things in right before the deadlines. For this online, asynchronous class, I've piloted using soft headlines (Fridays at 11pm) and hard deadlines (Mondays at 11pm), which seems to garner a lot of space and time for students to get their work done.
