The verbs that finish with consonant + vowel + consonant (CVC) and have one syllable double the final consonant: putting, swimming, cutting, running... The same happens with two-syllable verbs if the last syllable is stressed: commit: committing, preferring...
The verbs that finish with a silent -e lose that vowel when adding -ing: making, taking...
The verbs that finish with -ie change to -y and add -ing: die: dying
