Participles can finish with -ing (present) or -ed (past). There are also some of them which are irregular. They all work as adjectives.
We use -ing when the subject and the noun are the same:
Elvis' death, happening in 1975...
We use -ed when the subject and the noun are not the same:
These olive trees, planted in 1975... [a gardener planted them]
