Phoebe’s entire existence has been altered before her heart’s first beat.
Sabotaged by a rich man’s prideful whims, Phoebe’s initial DNA had her planned as a natural copy of Andrew’s: brown haired, blue eyed, fair skinned, and most of all, male.
However, as the council united to decide on their future fate, Wolfmann pushed forward the demand of transforming her base code into one of a female DNA. Seemingly an innocent change at first glance, this single altering would decide of Phoebe’s future compatibility while all of Pharmatek’s equipment and prototypes.
To say Phoebe had a childhood would be a revolting lie. Created in the Labs, the Twins were born officially on January 1st 2065.
Phoebe and Andrew, her brother, spent nearly their entire childhood hooked up to machinery in Pharmatek's labs, monitoring even the slightest fluctuation in which direction their teeth grew.
The perfect specimen in the literal definition of the term, not a single muscle out of place, no room for beauty marks, for freckles, for potential health issues…
When others kids learn to draw houses and cats with shitty crayolas, the twins were taught how to mathematically strategize everything.
Suddenly, fitting blocks in shapes wasn’t just skill learning, it was a necessary step to their training, failure was not an option for them, only letting them rest after hours of intense reflection and early physical therapy to prepare them for their future.
Surprisingly, keeping the twins together during this step made it all the more efficient as they acted as mutual support, encouraging each others and sometimes making it a fun competition. They became inseparable and often showed reluctance to do anything if the other wasn’t present.
As the two children became teenagers, the genetics manipulations came to bite them back and began to show signs of hormonal disfunctions in Phoebe’s growth.
Pharmatek, realizing all too late that genetically modifying her DNA gender might be an issue, raised the alarm concerning her compatibility with Drift technology, as it was only tested on male patients, with no female hormonal fluctuations taken into account.
However, the alarm did not budge Marco’s plans and the CEO opted to take out the Twins’ whistleblower instead, considering them a threat to the well-being of the project. The Drift Mirror project was pushed further, putting Phoebe as the center piece of the company’s future plans, should the project be successful.
That new focus on the twins raised interrogations on the employees’ safety, as one of them was clearly attached to the other and had the abilities to fight back due to his ongoing OPSY training. To insure the scientists’ safety, Phoebe was separated from Andrew entirely, not letting them contact each others outside of filtered and altered textual conversations.
To Phoebe, the break was violent and painful, as she watched her whole world cut off from her, only to be thrown into a loop of restless testing and torture.
To Andrew, it was a necessary step in growing up, a normalcy in Pharmatek’s narrative, not knowing the reality outside of the bubble of lies they built for him. Blinded by their truth, the twin believes that Pharmatek is actively helping his ill sister to heal from a very special condition, not realising they are creating said condition.
Knowing firsthand about her reluctance to participate, the UMF provided a restrictive suit created specifically for test patients in the Labs of Pharmatek. Equipped with medical efficiency and remote shocking devices, this state of the art suit breaks the subject’s desire to resist through direct punishment controlled by the security team.
Now isolated and subjected to a pseudo-scientific team through torture, Phoebe finds herself stuck in a loop of testing and failed installations of Drift Port implants. As the surgery interventions blend into one another, the team begins to lose hope and discuss a « recycling plan » for Phoebe, turning her into a Digital Assistant for lack of better use of her body, joking that they only « need her brain anyway ».
As the last few experiments close in before they move on to the DigiScan plans, Phoebe gets a flimsy version of Drift connected and manages to interact with the database, getting into contact with Tanaka. Unplanned by the research team, their encounter doesn’t go as expected and instead of following Data Security’s formatting, Tanaka begins to revolt and collects informations to help Phoebe in planning an escape window.
As she learns that Andrew is still in the facility and gets to be sent out on missions, she questions why her fate was any different, to which Marco responds:
— Oh. You were never meant to see the outside world.
Following that revelation, Tanaka and Phoebe decide to quick start their escape plan and the twin manages to break out of the laboratory she was held in, violently terminating the security and scientific team in the room.
As she manages to get out of the holding cell and through the security checkpoints with Tanaka’s help, Phoebe stumbles upon her brother, back from a mission. Shaken by the appearance of her distressed sister, Andrew stops Phoebe to question her state and what happened, stalling her escape in the process.
Trying and failing to convince her brother to escape with her, Phoebe is caught up by security agents who use the shock equipment on her suit, in her brother’s arms, before carrying her back to her room.
Blaming psychosis from her « condition », Pharmatek claims that they were trying an experimental cure, that induces a panic response in the patient. Andrew, enlisted in the OPSY and Data Security propaganda, did not question it until he met with Tanaka and Nathan later, in the Drift.
After that incident, all tests are put on hold to assess the damages on the work team and recruit suitable experts to cover the vacant positions. In the meantime, Phoebe is hooked on an isolated loop in the Drift, which slowly damages her nerves responses due to the flimsy port and the overuse, as punishment.
As Phoebe’s Drift limbo continues, the world outside of the Labs takes a wild turn as Exa_Gone breached into the defenses of Data Security and began to unveil the truth about the company’s experiments and funds distributions. Resulting in a forceful reboot of the Drift and the sacrifice of Tanaka, the servers are all turned off and Phoebe is unhooked from the port connection.
Prioritizing their efforts on Andrew’s build due to his backdoor mistakes and his active involvement on the field with the OPSY agents, the team decides to push back the installation of the Drift 1.1 on Phoebe for a undefined period. The chaos in the company following the start of the rebellion furthers the turmoil in the Labs and Phoebe’s progress is cast aside for more urgent matters such as developing a new Drift firewall and additional military implants for the UMF.
However, relief is short-lived as they already discuss a new build.
Installations resume and Phoebe’s torture returns as each connection fries her entire body in the process. Echoes of her pain resonate in the Drift, breaching past the information proofing walls of the different server rooms. This results in further fighting between Nathan and Andrew, as the latter’s denial is facing the obvious truth in front of him.
As Data Security prepares for the annual investor report, Marco pays a visit to Phoebe to inform her of their decision to turn her into their network’s Digital Assistant, sealing her fate as their AI puppet for their marketing cover and mascot, claiming a « feminine touch would help sell it better ».
In a surge of rage, Phoebe headbutts the man and accidently dislodges her Drift Port, undoing the latest installments. This forces them to reinstall the port again and she manages to connect with JAKE and Nathan and tells them Data Security’s plans for the annual gala.
Exa_Gone decides to use that opportunity to sabotage their soirée and expose the truth on that fateful evening.
It’s on that same night that Andrew is sent to dispose of Nathan and JAKE, on the roof of the Data Security tower. Phoebe is being sent through sampling and planning for the DigiScan later that night, to celebrate the renewal of the triade partnership.
However, thanks to Sheryl’s success in finishing Nathan’s plan, Data Security’s funds are frozen until the triade processes the events that unfolded, leaving a time window for Phoebe’s potential rescue.
After his traumatizing fight against Nathan, Andrew comes to his senses and breaks his sister out after some punching around in the Labs, they finally reunite and Phoebe has more energy than before due to the break from the tests she's had.
They're helped by Exagone, which Phoebe knows a little about from the few sessions that went alright
After their arrival, Phoebe gets to meet most of Exagone in the Hideout, loving every single one of them and super thankful for their help all the time; they LOVE her
Her and Andrew finally get to have complicit times again, discussing their eventual freedom if they ever make it out and making an oath that whatever happens, they'll always have each others back
Andrew gets to kill Marco behind everyone's back, Phoebe cries in relief after she sees her brother come back, they both cry, repeating over and over how they're finally done with Marco, forever
They get to catch up on lost time, discover the real world, Phoebe gets her Drift port removed, they are granted freedom
