ABOUT

36, Matthies is an ex computer engineer who specialized in robotics and AI. They’re a brilliant inventor, but their single-minded focus on their work can sometimes lead them to neglect other aspects of their life. They’re very playful and childish in personality, with an enormous heart and a deep attachment to people.

Having left their job years ago, they currently owns an arcade called ‘Funky Neon Arcade’. Being Nathan’s and Shawn’s mentor in the hacking field, Matthies became a brotherly figure to the group.

Matthies is auditory impaired and uses they/them pronouns.

Matthies is an ex-computer engineer who worked at Nexus in their youth. They left after a fight with their colleagues over company policy and decided to pursue their passion for retro games and open an arcade in DISTRICT08 in 2067.

Darkened glasses

As a precaution for prolonged screen exposure in their work field, Matthies has a darkened glasses prescription.

Always carrying tools

In light of their career as a part-time repairman, they always carry a tool pouch on their person.
You never know when you’ll need a flat screwdriver afterall!

Auditory implants

Necessary on a daily basis, Matthies wears auditory implants to enhance their hearing. Despite Pharmatek’s improvements over the years, they still can’t seem to get these right, always needing fine tuning.

Noticable age gap

Unlike the rest of the Exa_Gone members, Matthies stands out as the eldest by a decade, making them a parental figure rather than just a mentor.

BACKGROUND

Childhood

Lived in Denmark with his family before he moved to MayCity to pursue his studies.

Work in Nexus Collective

In his early days, Matthies worked in the Nexus Collective, who would later be known as Data Security, as a R&D researcher. He met William Bender and Jake Teling, and they become friends, helping each others regarding their scientific projects.

Jake and William Bender

After his departure from Nexus Co., Matthies kept helping Jake and William on the Drift prototype. However, due to the UMF threat looming over the project, he erased all traces of his involvement and kept a low profile, hoping to ensure his safety.

He was greatly affected by the disappearance of his two friends and promised to never get involved with Data Security again.

Meeting Nathan and Shawn

As the years rolled by, Matthies continued taking care of his arcade business, living a relatively peaceful routine, until Nathan and Shawn arrived in his life. The bonding was immediate and he vowed to protect the kids, going as far as to adopt Shawn.

Mentoring Exa_Gone

As two kids became three teenagers, Matthies took on the role of a mentor for Nathan, Shawn and Chris, teaching them the ropes of hacktivism against Data Security’s supremacy.

Dusting off his knowledge from his past hacking days, Matthies became an important figure to provide Exa_Gone with solid skills and a place to crash.

Despite their vow to avoid Data Security, it seems their friends’ legacy has yet to let him rest.

Parental Duty

TANAKA’s sacrifice hit like a wakeup call in Exa_Gone, everyone became hyper-aware of the possibility of their demise at any given moment and began to work on the final stages of the rebellion.

While Jane and Sheryl took care of the social part of the rebellion and Chris took part in the active firepower, Matthies stayed in the hideout to help Shawn and Nathan upgrade JAKE and the cell’s security, often taking the role of the organiser in planning out hideout switching.

So when Nate’s accident happened, Matthies feared the worst with Nate’s life on the line, and used back their old research at Nexus to install the spine with Ahmed’s help.

Alliance with the Twins

After Nathan’s accident, Matthies and Shawn focused on rescuing him with the help of Ahmed and the spine implant. Monitoring Nathan with Shawn felt like losing a son to Matthies, making them all the more cautious with their implant tinkering.

However, the Twins’ arrival didn’t surprise them much, even remaining neutral on the matter, bordering on friendly by helping Phoebe with her Drift port removal.

Despite Shawn’s obvious conflicted feelings on the matter, Matthies made the more mature decision and left him to take a break from the group, insisting on receiving regular signals to reassure them that their son is fine.

Justice

After Nathan’s fight against OPSY agents and Marco, successfully damaging their ranks, Exa_Gone takes the decision to upload JAKE into the DS servers, rebooting the entire system at the cost of various technical issues across the country.

For Matthies, this is the end of Marco’s tyranny and justice for their friends William and Jake.
