ABOUT

Prodigious hacker and social recluse, Shawn is unmatched in his field.

Initially coming from a poor family from DISTRICT10, he met Matthies at the FUNKY NEON Arcade where he found a ‘brother’ and a refuge. Later joined by Nathan, the two learned the ropes of coding and hacking under Matthies’ wing.

As they grew, Shawn became a master of technology and secured his place as the data expert of Exa_Gone.

In direct contrast to his mental skills, his social presence is near inexistant, clinically suffering from severe anxiety, PTSD and trust issues. He only allows his inner circle to see the friendlier side of him and hangs out on occasions with them.

Physically, Shawn is very insecure about his appearance, despite Chris’ reassurance that he is ‘dashing’. His anxiety rendered his skin conditions long-termed and he hides his dark eyes behind long and messy bangs. If anything, Nathan jokingly calls him ‘Shaggy’ due to his similar fashion and posture.

He lives alone in the same building as Nathan, in DISTRICT11, and occasionally works at the FUNKY NEON Arcade. When he’s not there, Shawn stays at their Hideout 01 in DISTRICT07.

BACKGROUND

Childhood

Born in a poor and disfunctional family and casted aside in favor of a princess little sister, Shawn Faulkner learned early in his life that you have to fight for yourself in a society where injustice reigns. Barely tall enough to pass rides at the fair, Shawn was already nose deep into the intricacy of technology.

School was never his forte and he was pushed around by his classmates, making him drop out of school quickly and he found his way at the FUNKY NEON Arcade on a boring afternoon at the age of 8.

In 20–, he meets MATTHIES, then aged —, who is behind the counter and catches his eyes with their unconvenional style. Shawn catches himself off guard and starts chatting with the older nerd, before retreating to his silent shell. Matthies on the other hand, flips a switch and starts rambling about games. The discussion is unbalanced but neither mind.

As life becomes harder at home with his sister’s wailing and his parents deep into drug usage, Shawn spends more time than not at Matthies’ arcade and starts bringing his computer along. The other hacker learns about his household and sympathises with him. Matthies opens up about their brother and Shawn’s respect for them grows.

After long and repetitive discussions over his homelife, Matthies and Shawn decided to apply for a childcare program in which Matthies would be their currator and Shawn would be independant from his biological family. In the meantime, Shawn became a fixed furniture in the arcade due to his prolonged stays. His parents showed indifference in regard to his departure, which confirmed Shawn’s feeling of finding belonging elsewhere.

A year into their agreement and Shawn moving into Matthies’ home, NATHAN crashes into their carefully laid out routine. Nathan, unaware of his role at the arcade, drags him to the machines and the two become playing pals.

Matthies begins to teach the two kids about the hacking side of coding when they are respectively 9 and 10, a month after Nathan’s arrival. Matthies and Nathan become sibling figures to Shawn and he finally found refuge at their place, having his belongings littered here and there, away from his parents’ reach to sell for goods, finally understanding what it means to feel loved.

Teenagehood

Shawn, now aged 14, ultimately drops out of school entirely, goes no contact with his family entirely (they still had contact despite his departure from the household) and he helps Matthies at work. In exchange, Matthies spends some of their time at work to teach him on whatever subject they can think of, being a living encyclopedia themselves.

Nathan’s reveal about his father’s notes turns Shawn’s world upside down and the trio decides to focus their efforts into completing ‘Project JAKE’.

CHRIS crashes into their lives when he hits 15, just as they finish JAKE.

At first, Shawn internally resents the boy for being a ‘rich prick’ but decides to cast his opinion aside not to be rejected from the group. Chris, on the other hand, grows extremly fond of the two teenagers instantly, especially Shawn who he adores. His repetitive compliments and praises make Shawn uncomfortable and he doesn’t trust him with JAKE.

Shawn feels left aside as Nathan and Chris attend classes and he decides to dive deeper into hacking out of spite, finding his calling in the numbers and functions. At home, Matthies grieves how closed off Shawn has turned but gives him room to breath. Jealous of Nathan becoming distant, Shawn decides to hack into Data Security to find informations on JAKE and gain Nathan’s attention.

It’s not until Nathan and Chris drag him along to vandalise a DS generator that Shawn realise they all share a common goal to bring the mega corporation down. The three boys grow into rebellious rascals, running around all day and compromising Data Security around DISTRICT08.

Matthies catches word of their activism and half-heartedly reprimands them, before revealing that he himself was part of System and teaches them how to vandalise properly.

They officially name themselves Exa_Gone and Shawn finds purpose in their activism.

Now aged 17, Matthies reveals to Shawn that he has put money aside for him and the account is now stocked, at the age he was when he got his life together. Shawn decides to get his own place in DISTRICT11, 85A 3683 MegaPlex (Shawn). He is shortly joined by Nathan who lives in the same building a few months later.

He still works part-time at the arcade, but now spends most of the days in their hideout in DISTRICT07 that he set up with Chris.

While he is less in the spotlight of their operations, Shawn remains a key to the success of Exa_Gone. Nathan is often consulting him for help when it comes to electronics, a world that holds nearly no secrets for the smaller man. He is the first to break the news that they have breach Data Security’s firewall and helps the others around. He becomes the referee for any data treatment needed.

Having found a new family and safety in their gang, Shawn decided to get therapy to overcome his severe medical anxiety and trust issues. After all, « maybe Chris isn’t that bad of a prick. »
