William Bender was a scientist for the R&D branch of the Nexus Collective. Head of Drift research, he became a key component in the understanding of data handling and biocompatible implants. Accompanied by his best friend and co-chief of the project, JAKE TELING, he broke through the complex relationship between human mental projection and the visualisation of digital spaces through neuronal connections.
Praised for his findings, he was targeted by BEN WOLFMANN’s interest to sell his project to the UMF (Unionized Military Forces) in hopes of turning the technology into battlefield efficient equipment, which William refused.
Scared of the outcome of their breakthrough with Jake, they decided to come up with a fail safe protocol to protect the users from irreversible mental damage with the help of what will later be called Drift Assistants. From this safety measure was the assistant program JAKE created, as a copy of JAKE TELING’s DigiScan.
Aware of his compromised position and his decision to sabotage Nexus Collective property, William fragmented his researches in two halves, one left in his son’s care, and the other kept as a decoy in his work station.
It isn’t until two weeks later that his best friend JAKE TELING disappears, presumably disposed of by BEN WOLFMANN’s mercenaries. In his hurry, William had very little time to explain the truth to his family before he too was gone, never to be found again. He leaves behind a wife and their two children, NATHAN and SHERYL.
His legacy now lies into the hands of his son, NATHAN, who bravely reconstructs the JAKE software hoping to find answers.

Initially created as virtual library for tests and data visualisation experiments, the Drift project team, consisting then of WILLIAM BENDER and JAKE TELING, was coupled with the R&D team of Implants research.
They believed that the combination of a virtual space and a neuronal implant could allow disabled people to interact in a more advanced way than regular VR builds.
Realizing that the UMF (Unionized Military Forces)’s interests in the project were not well-intended, William and Jake decided to modify their plans of regular DigiScan. They turned Jake’s scan into a digital assistant, unsynchronising his consciousness from his real version. This change led to an AI-like version of his best friend to remain in the Drift database as a safeguard and hidden whistleblower.
This small change, coupled with some fine tuning of the access required for the systems to work, led to the technology being faulty for any users without the safety clearance JAKE brought. The two men then decided to swap copies of the project with dupes under Nexus Collective’s nose and hide the real half of the JAKE program in the belongings of NATHAN, as no one would suspect a child to hold such valuable contents.
Classified as corporate sabotage, WILLIAM BENDER and JAKE TELING were hunted by BEN WOLFMANN’s mercenaries, under the direction of his second-hand man MARCO ANATIA KALEO.
