Saito Tanaka is an Drift Assistant that belongs to Data Security.
He helps the employees and the Twins navigate the softwares developed by the company.
Saito Tanaka was a renowned activist against the late Nexus Collective-early Data Security group in the 2080s.
Captured by the UMF for interrogations, he was later declared missing after an "escape from their facilities", a coverup story for his transfer in Pharmatek’s care for the early stage of testing Drift 1.
After project JAKE’s disappearance, the remaining Drift team had no way of exploiting the Drift system without a digital assistant and needed someone as intellectually capable on the hacking side as Jake Teling was.
They decided to forcefully DigiScan Tanaka against his will, which resulted in a faulty and limited assistant build.
It is unknown what happened to his real world’s counterpart, as all that remains is his digital incomplete copy.
To this day, he remains Data Security’s prime digital assistant in the internal projects and shows a peculiar resilience against their system, despite having his memory wiped out.
With the development of OPSY materials, and the upcoming plans regarding Drift hosting, Tanaka occasionally interacts with Andrew in his Drift sessions and training, helping him through the database; and Phoebe, to sooth her painful progression through the Host formatting.
Saito Tanaka grew up with his sister Sachiko in the lower city of MayCity. Early in his life, he turned to activism, especially against the oppressive United Military Forces (UMF) and their alliance with Nexus Collective, who would later be known as Data Security.
During his years as an activist, Tanaka managed to break into the UMF files and found out about the Ares project during the passing from Nexus to DataSec.
However, his discovery got him raided by OPSY and imprisoned in their quarters, at the mercy of Kaleo’s punishment.
Missing JAKE to unlock Data Security’s Drift admin, Marco decides to turn Tanaka into a Drift assistant to brute-force the cipher, but their protocol is incomplete and he turns out to be a faulty assistant.
Frustrated, Marco orders Saito’s death and TANAKA’s memory wipeout. TANAKA is now a Drift Assistant for their servers, half useless and no goal in mind.
Needing a use for TANAKA, Marco assigns him to help the Twins navigate the secure internal servers of Data Security.
While his memory has been tampered with, TANAKA retained some traits of his behavior and knows he is missing parts of his old life.
As he pushes to get memories back, TANAKA exhibits what DS classifies as rogue symptoms: the Assistant is showing signs of revolt. As the rogue intensifies, TANAKA turns into a mole to help Phoebe and works with Exa_Gone in secret to free the Twins.
As Exa_Gone breaks DS’ security, TANAKA gets word of their plan and accelerates it by sabotaging Andrew’s Drift link and grant them a backdoor in, compromising Andrew in the process hoping for a successful outcome.
However, their plans are cut short by the Drift reboot looming over them as the Drift alerted Marco’s staff of the breach.
Knowing this could compromise all of Exa’s efforts for good, TANAKA decides to sacrifice himself to give them more time and transfers all his access and knowledge to JAKE in an emergency patch.
Following TANAKA’s sacrifice in the Drift 1.0 to 1.1, Exa_Gone is left in possession of his shards that grant them additional permissions and new commands to further dive into the archives.
Now free of the limits of restricted access, JAKE is now able to fully extract all the juicy secrets in Data Security’s hidden files and kick-start the rebellion in May City.
Thanks to TANAKA’s sacrifice, Exa_Gone managed to put their plan to execution, despite the bumpy road and the fighting between Andrew and Nathan.
With Marco finally out of the picture, Exa_Gone launches the final step of the rebellion and proceeds to launch JAKE in the Data Security’s network to reboot their entire system. JAKE’s mission is fulfilled and his revenge and TANAKA’s achieved.
Andrew and Phoebe are finally free and Phoebe gets to live for both of them.
